The Digital Harinezumi 8mm Digital Camera, Or Why Urban Outfitters Annoys Me.

The Harinezumi is a new digital camera that apes the images of an 8mm movie camera so well, it leaves me speechless (See a great example, 36 Hours in Tokyo by oktranscend, below). The camera itself is adorable, styled after a 110 film canister. While it doesn't record sound, it does leave a light hiss on the audio track, which is just perfect. I should love everything about this camera, but I don't, because Urban Outfitters has given it a $170 price tag.

I'm sorry, but that's just insane. If this was a beautifully crafted, MoMA-worthy camera, then maybe. But what it is, in reality, is a cheap plastic camera that will do something beautiful until you sneeze on it and it breaks. $50-60, and you'd start a stylistic revolution on YouTube. $170, and you've got a handful of inspired creative people, and some rich kids with another hunk of trash in their desk drawer. Do something daring, Urban Outfitters. You know you want to.
